Wide receiver Dante Pettis was predicted by many to be a candidate for the San Francisco 49ers' breakout player this season. He finished Week 1 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a single catch for seven yards. It was the only time Pettis was targeted in the game.

In Pettis' defense, he wasn't out on the field a whole lot. The second-year receiver spent the last couple of weeks dealing with a groin injury. Still, he was a full participant during practices on Thursday and Friday. So why didn't fans see the young receiver out on the field more in Tampa?

"He had health issues," Shanahan told reporters after the game. "That's why he missed a week of practice. He just got cleared to come back on Monday, so he was a little behind the 8 ball on that. But he didn't start the game, and we didn't have a ton of long drives where we got into the substitution flow.

"He went into this game backing up, and when he did go in there, from everything I saw live, he did a hell of a job. So hopefully, he'll work off that and continue to earn some more time out there."

Pro Bowl tight end George Kittle, of course, led the 49ers in receiving yards with eight catches for 54 yards. Among the wideouts, Pettis, Richie James, Deebo Samuel, Kendrick Bourne, and Marquise Goodwin combined for seven catches for 79 receiving yards and a touchdown.

The 49ers ended up winning the game against the Buccaneers 31-17.

San Francisco's next opponent will be the Cincinnati Bengals on September 15. The kick-off from Paul Brown Stadium is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. PT (1:00 p.m. ET).

Why 49ers rookie Isaac Guerendo sees limited college experience as a benefit

By David Bonilla
May 9

Isaac Guerendo carried the football 132 times during his final collegiate season, rushing for 810 yards and 11 touchdowns. It marked the most carries the Louisville running back had during a single season throughout his college career. Consistently finding himself behind another running back on the depth chart, Guerendo started only one game in college, which might seem like a negative to some evaluators. However, the San Francisco 49ers were willing to see what the young running back could do at the professional level, making him a fourth-round draft pick. "I've played with a lot of great backs, been in a lot of great rooms," Guerendo told reporters on Thursday after reporting to the 49ers for the rookie minicamp. The rookie doesn't perceive his

ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler identified the selection of wide receiver Ricky Pearsall as the most questionable move of the 2024 NFL Draft, instead expecting the San Francisco 49ers to bolster their offensive line with their first-round pick. This week, Matt Barrows of The Athletic fielded fan questions and was asked why more wasn't done to fortify the offensive line. Yes, the 49ers drafted two offensive linemen, but not until the third and sixth rounds. Barrows highlights two narratives to explain the failure to address the tackle position. After all, Trent

Bucky Brooks explains why 49ers drafting Ricky Pearsall was a reaction to Super Bowl loss

By David Bonilla
May 11

NFL Network's Bucky Brooks believes Ricky Pearsall will open up opportunities for head coach Kyle Shanahan. He suggests that drafting the rookie was a response to the San Francisco 49ers' Super Bowl 58 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. During the "NFL Fantasy Football Show," Brooks stated that the rookie wide receiver will address some issues the 49ers offense faced against man coverage. "I think it's a direct reaction to the Super Bowl," Brooks declared. Confidently entering the game, the 49ers believed they had a solid game plan for the Chiefs, who had previously defeated them in the Super Bowl only four years

The San Francisco 49ers are on a mission to rebound from their February Super Bowl defeat, eyeing a return to the NFL title game and aiming to lift the Vince Lombardi Trophy at the season's end. What stands as their greatest hurdle in achieving this goal? Is it the Kansas City Chiefs, who claimed victory over them in the Super Bowl and will face them again in a Week 7 rematch?
