With many of the starters expected to play in the preseason finale against the Houston Texans, the San Francisco 49ers announced that the following 16 players will not suit up for the contest at NRG Stadium.

On Wednesday, head coach Kyle Shanahan said that the plan is to have his starters play for a couple of drives. The team will then have 17 days until the regular-season opener against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field on Sunday, September 11.

"I'd like them to get a couple of drives," Shanahan said on KNBR, a day after telling reporters that his starters weren't expected to play beyond the first half. "I just want them to go out and have a little bit of the continuity of the offense. They haven't played since the first game of the preseason. After this, we have 17 days, I believe. Something like that until they play again (in Week 1 against the Bears).

"That's such a long time that I want them to go out there and just get in there a little bit. But I'm trying to get them out pretty fast. My goal is for them to stay healthy, and as long as they do that, I'll be happy."

Why 49ers' Trent Williams sees last season as a success despite Super Bowl loss

San Francisco 49ers tackle Trent Williams has had ample time to reflect on the Super Bowl 58 defeat in Las Vegas. Looking back on his 2023 campaign, he refuses to label the season a failure, instead focusing on the positives of his team's valiant effort. "That's the biggest loss you can take, but at the end of the day, you look at it for what it is," Williams said on "The Shop" podcast, according to Tristi Rodriguez of NBC Sports Bay Area. "I'm a realist. There were two teams left out of 32 teams. Two teams fighting for that one trophy. Yeah, it sucks, but you got to look back and say, at the end of the day, it was a successful season. I used to think,
