Amid criticisms about their quality of play on offense through their first four games, the San Francisco 49ers put together their best offensive performance of the season on Sunday, racking up 397 total yards in a 37-15 drubbing of the Carolina Panthers.
The offense was led by 253 passing yards and two touchdowns on 18-of-30 passing from quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and 120 yards and one touchdown on 17 carries from running back Jeff Wilson. Panthers quarterback Baker Mayfield went 20-of-36 for 215 yards and one interception in the loss, while the 49ers converted 7-of-12 on third downs against just 3-of-15 from the Panthers.
First Half
The 49ers opened the game with a statement drive, moving 75 yards in seven plays to take a quick 7-0 lead after a 9-yard touchdown pass from Garoppolo to running back Tevin Coleman. The touchdown was set up by a 41-yard run from running back Jeff Wilson, then Garoppolo found Coleman for a short completion on a 2nd-and-Goal that Coleman ran in for a score.

A three-and-out followed the touchdown for the Panthers, leading the 49ers to take over at their own 15-yard line. The Panthers got a break six plays later when they recovered a fumble by tight end George Kittle, who had the ball stripped by linebacker Damien Wilson following a catch. But the 49ers escaped unscathed after the turnover when the defense forced a 41-yard field goal attempt after 10 plays that was missed by kicker Eddy Pineiro, giving the 49ers the ball at their own 31-yard line.
Coleman stepped up again on the next drive, making a 30-yard leaping catch down the sidelines of a Garoppolo heave on a 3rd-and-4. The 49ers stumbled from there and had to settle for a 49-yard field goal from Robbie Gould to take a 10-0 lead early in the second quarter.

The Panthers responded with a 43-yard field goal after a nine-play, 53-yard drive to cut the lead to 10-3, then the two teams exchanged punts to bring the game clock down to four minutes remaining in the half. The 49ers then put together a seven-play, 29-yard drive that resulted in a 43-yard field goal attempt from Gould, but the kick was blocked and recovered by the Panthers at their own 22-yard line.

The Panthers had 1:43 to work with after the blocked kick, but their possession ended in disaster when Mayfield tossed a pick-six to 49ers cornerback Emmanuel Moseley. The Panthers faced a 2nd-and-20 from their own 30-yard line when Mayfield sailed a pass over the hands of running back Christian McCaffrey and into the arms of Moseley, who weaved his way through traffic for a 41-yard score.

A three-and-out from the Panthers followed the interception, then the 49ers ran out the clock after receiving the punt. The first half was an efficient one on both offense and defense for the 49ers, who gained 205 total yards to Carolina's 133 and converted 3-of-6 third downs compared to just 1-of-7 for the Panthers.
Second Half
The third quarter started out more positively for the Panthers, who got a special teams boost to start the half via a 45-yard kick return from Raheem Blackshear. The return was followed by a seven-play, 51-yard drive that ended in a 19-yard fourth-down touchdown run from McCaffrey. The Panthers chose to go for a two-point conversion after a penalty by 49ers linebacker Fred Warner but fell short, keeping the score at 17-9.

The 49ers responded with a touchdown of their own, albeit one that came with an assist from the Panthers. After starting the drive on their own 25-yard line, the 49ers moved inside Panthers territory where they faced a 4th-and-3 from the 43-yard line. A pass attempt from Garoppolo fell incomplete on the play, but Panthers cornerback C.J. Henderson was flagged for pass interference on wide receiver Deebo Samuel, keeping the drive alive. The 49ers followed the penalty with a 32-yard completion to wide receiver Jauan Jennings to the 3-yard line, then Garoppolo connected with Samuel three plays later to give the 49ers a 24-9 lead.

The Panthers got another big return from Blackshear (50 yards) after the touchdown, which set up possession at the 50 after Gould made a tackle that sent him to the sidelines with a knee injury. Pineiro added a 37-yard field goal at the end of the possession to cut the lead to 24-12, then the 49ers answered with a 12-play, 75-yard drive that took over six minutes off the clock and finished with a touchdown run from Wilson to open up a 30-12 lead. A penalty on the following two-point conversion attempt forced the 49ers to try a long extra point with punter Mitch Wishnowsky, who missed wide left with 12:31 remaining in the game.

The Panthers drove 59 yards in 12 plays after the touchdown before choosing to add another field goal on 4th-and-2 from the 49ers' 16-yard line, much to the dismay of the home crowd. The 49ers answered with a four-play drive that resulted in a punt that pinned the Panthers at their own 10-yard line, then the defense put the game away by holding the Panthers to a turnover on downs that ended with a sack from rookie defensive end Drake Jackson that gave the 49ers the ball at the 3. Coleman ran the ball in two plays later for his second touchdown of the game to give the 49ers a 37-15 lead.
PJ Walker entered the game at quarterback for the Panthers in place of Mayfield after the touchdown and moved the offense into 49ers territory before turning the ball over on downs. The 49ers ran out the clock from there to seal the win.
The 49ers moved to 3-2 on the season with the win and now sit atop the NFC West after losses from each of their division rivals on Sunday. The Panthers fell to 1-4 on the season with the loss.
Game Notes: The 49ers were 6.5-point favorites heading into the game... This was the 23rd meeting between the Panthers and 49ers, with the Panthers holding a 13-9 edge coming into the game. The 49ers won the last meeting, a 51-13 home victory on October 27, 2019... Pineiro's missed field goal in the first quarter snapped a streak of 27 consecutive made field goals... The 49ers will stay on the East Coast in the coming days, preparing for their upcoming game against the Atlanta Falcons (2-3) while staying at the Greenbrier resort in West Virginia. The 49ers and Falcons will kick off at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. ET on Sunday, October 16.
